Humble Beginnings

Loy Harn was born in Brunswick, Georgia, the youngest of five children — all whose names began with "L." His name has its own story. His oldest sister, LaMonnie, was getting married to a man named Roy while he was in utero. Continuing the "L" name tradition, and with a fondness of the name Roy, he was named "Loy".

Before jewelry, Loy tried several paths. He worked for the railroad company until a tragic accident shook him deeply. He framed houses as a carpenter, often sent as the "greenhorn" to walk across exposed trusses — a job that taught him both grit and caution. He later delivered soft drinks for Coca-Cola through brutal Southern summers and cold winters, hauling cases into gas stations and grocery stores. It was during those long, hot deliveries that he decided he wanted a career indoors — something skilled, creative, and lasting.

Finding His Calling

While attending community college in Savannah, he took a job at Freedman's Jewelers in the mall. One day, he came home and told his mother she no longer needed to pay for his schooling. He had found his calling. He would become a jeweler.

At Freedman's, he learned the repair side of the trade — the technical discipline that would later set him apart. A few years later, he saw a newspaper ad from White's Jewelers in Mount Pleasant looking for a jeweler. In the early 1970s, he moved from Savannah to Mount Pleasant and went to work at White's, the first, and only jewelry store in town.

Not long after, the owner stepped away from the business. Loy purchased the tools and supplies and made a decision that defined his life: he would never work for anyone else again.

In 1980, Loy Harn Jewelers Was Born

The original store was just 400 square feet with one showcase. Loy was a one-man operation — designer, repairman, caster, and salesman. But his talent and work ethic quickly outgrew the space.

He moved to Patriots Plaza on Highway 17, then later to Wando Crossing. At one point, he had twelve jewelers working under him. Everything was done in-house: wax carvings, casting, custom design, platinum work, and intricate repairs.

Loy became one of the Southeast's largest wholesale jewelers, performing casting and repair work for major retailers including Belk, Zales, and more than fifteen jewelry stores throughout the Charleston area. Jewelers across the region depended on Loy Harn Jewelers for expert craftsmanship behind the scenes.

He was especially known for his artistic gift — taking outdated, worn, or broken jewelry and transforming it into something entirely new and fashionable. Long before heirloom redesign became popular, Loy was doing it by hand at his bench.

In 2002, cancer suddenly claimed Loy Harn's life. His passing left an enormous void — in his family, in the community, and in the jewelry industry he had quietly helped shape across the Southeast.

His two children inherited the business and carried it forward together. After six years, his son, Jason Harn, purchased his sister's interest and committed fully to continuing the legacy.

Jason Harn

Jason had already grown up at the bench. With more than 20 years of hands-on experience in the jewelry industry, he refined the skills his father taught him — but he never stopped learning.

Years later, Jim Stewart from the Jim Stewart International School for Jewelers reached out to Jason and shared something meaningful: this was the very school Loy had attended years before. Though Jason already had experience, he saw it as an opportunity to further perfect his craft.

He enrolled to deepen his expertise in advanced diamond setting, platinum ring sizing, casting, wax carving, and technical bench work — proving that true craftsmen never stop sharpening their tools.

As jewelry technology evolved, Jason committed to staying at the forefront of innovation. He invested in state-of-the-art laser welding technology — advancements that had not yet existed during Loy's time — and attended specialized laser training, completing advanced certification courses to master this precision tool.

Today, we use laser technology and modern techniques daily in our repair and custom design process. It allows for cleaner repairs, more delicate restorations, and innovative design techniques that were once impossible — blending old-world craftsmanship with modern precision.

Our store now employs three full-time expert jewelers, keeping custom work and repairs in-house — just as Loy always believed it should be.

Family

Jason married Keenan Grayson, a Pawleys Island native, and together they have built both a family and an expanded legacy. They have been married for over a decade and have three daughters who are already part of the story.

Their oldest daughter, Mary Alice, is named after Loy’s mother. Their second daughter, Loyal, carries her grandfather’s name. Their youngest, Susan, is named in honor of Keenan’s late mother.

Today, Loy Harn Jewelers is located at The Market at Oakland in Mount Pleasant, where we are currently expanding and doubling the size of our showroom. We continue to specialize in custom bridal, engagement rings, wedding bands, antique restoration, and heirloom redesign — transforming sentimental pieces into something modern, wearable, and deeply personal.
